Funding Received for Startup of North Florida Feral Hog Biogenetics Projects
As of 01 NOV 2025, we have invested the initial funding to start up our North Florida Feral Hog Field Laboratory and begin our research projects. This is exciting as we have worked for over two years and three hurricanes to get to this point.

The Importance of Feral Hog Management
Feral hogs, also known as wild pigs, piney woods rooters, and wild boar, have become a significant ecological and economic concern in many regions. These animals are notorious for their ability to reproduce rapidly and cause extensive damage to crops, pasturelands, and native ecosystems. Wild hogs also carry many diseases that are transmissible to domestic livestock, wild animals, pets and even humans. Because of the pressing need to manage feral hog populations effectively, researchers are looking towards innovative approaches such as biogenetics. This article announces our latest funding round to allow us to launch our Steinhatchee, Florida Field Site for feral hog biogenetics projects, which aim to tackle the challenges posed by these highly intelligent, interesting but invasive species.
Exploration of Biogenetics Solutions
Biogenetics is at the forefront of wildlife management as it offers potential solutions for controlling feral hog populations. By studying the genetic makeup of these animals, researchers can identify traits linked to reproduction, behavior, and adaptability. One of the first full genome mapping was of the domestic pig. With a direct link to our North American feral hog, the insights gained from such early studies have paved the way for developing methods to limit their breeding capacity, improve selective targeting during control efforts, and enhance conservation outcomes for native species. However, advancing such projects requires adequate funding to support research activities, personnel, and technology.
Funding Sources for Research Initiatives
When it comes to securing funding for feral hog biogenetics projects, several resources are available to researchers and organizations to include government grants, including those from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), wildlife management and conservation initiatives, state-level departments, and private sources.
Dakota Research Labs is currently using internal private funding to begin our research projects. We now have funding to begin fitting out our North Florida Field Lab. We hope to leverage our startup successes to reach non-profit organizations and foundations interested in wildlife conservation, as well as government and private parties interested in research that aligns with their mission, which can include innovative biogenetics projects aimed at reducing the negative impact of feral hogs. Furthermore, our planned collaborations with interested academic institutions can unlock resources and partnership grants designed for research advancements in wildlife technology.
We are pleased we can begin our laboratory projects and testing and hope to receive approval for field testing in the near future.
